NEW TALENT - GIDGEE COAL AWARDS

There’s a new face emerging in the traditional and contemporary bush ballad nominations.   Just last week and a big week at that, Queenslander Denise Brooks released a single to radio, launched her debut album and topped it off with places in three finalist categories and a win in last weekend’s Gidgee Coal Awards.

Denise took home the New Talent Award and a finalist nomination for Female Vocal at Queensland ’s major bush ballad event, at this year’s Gidgee Coal Bush Ballad Awards in Pittsworth.  Denise is also named in the New Talent Category in the national Stan Coster Memorial Memorial Bush Ballad Awards for 2008.

Her debut single released this month on NFS A Scene From Long Ago is a front runner for Denise.  It’s the first single from her solo EP Pioneers and Poets launched November 10 in Maryborough.

Recorded at Brad Wann’s Top Cat Recording Studios in Alstonville in New South Wales the 6 track EP is a tale of pioneering history capably inspired by credible writers Ray Rose, Buddy Thomson and John Seers.

Two standout tracks ‘Our Women Pioneers’|Ray Rose and ‘Through The Hard Times’ |John Seers/Bob Magee are dedicated to the often understated role that women played in Australia ’s history.

A Scene From Long Ago released on November’s NFS compilation 118.

Denise has won numerous Female Bush Ballad Awards and Overall Awards on the Queensland Country Music Festival circuit and is the only Bush Ballad artist to win the coveted Emerald Gems Of Country Overall Award.   She was a top 4 Grand Finalist in the ABBA Bush Ballad Starquest Competition in Tamworth in both 2004 and 2005 as well as being a top 5 finalist in Female Vocal at the Gidgee Coal Bush Ballad Awards in 2006.   She was the 2007 winner of the Encouragement Award at the Stan Coster Bush Ballad Awards at Bungendore.

In Tamworth 2008 Denise appears at 3 daily open air shows in Kable Avenue , and other venues also daily at the Bangtail Muster Bush Poets Shows, Sam Smythe’s Bush Poets’ Breakfasts and at various venues with Tamworth artist Stan J. Hunt.

Denise’s filmclip produced by Michael Bryers and filmed at Wyreima, Thinoomba about 10kms west of Maryborough, will air shortly on Nu Country and CMC
